Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust Policy for the Managing Behaviour and Exclusion Policy (Promoting Positive Behaviour and managing Exclusions from Service and/or Treatment for Substance Misuse/Drug and Alcohol Service Users)
There has been a dramatic increase in recent years in the levels of violence and abuse faced by staff, visitors and patients to many departments within the NHS, including those within drug treatment services. In most cases, perpetrators of violence and abuse are well known to staff. There is a widespread recognition of a need to tackle such behaviour effectively. Fear of violence could seriously affect staff morale and the ability to retain and recruit staff, and to appropriately treat our patients.
The following policy is therefore intended to provide a framework for staff and service users in order to ensure that the need to protect staff is properly balanced against the need to provide healthcare to individual patients. However, it should be borne in mind that the overall aim of this policy is to promote best practice in interaction with patients, in order to prevent or minimise incidents of violence or aggressive behaviour.
