Getting ready for the Recovery Games

The Recovery Games is set to take place on Friday August 17th in Doncaster with over 600 competitors going head to head in a day of fun packed gladiator style games and obstacle courses.

The annual event, which has been running for five years, celebrates the success and achievements of those who are in recovery from long term health or drug and/ or alcohol addiction. Teams are made up of people from within the recovery community who have either ‘lived experience’ or who work, volunteer or mentor in the drug and alcohol service.

Event organiser Neil Firbank, Aspire Senior Day Programme Lead, said: “The Recovery Games has grown into a whole community family fun day with lots of activities for spectators too. These games symbolise that recovery does and can happen with the right support. It gives those who are on their own recovery journey a chance to join in, have fun with others who are experiencing the recovery process. I hope that once again local people will come along and show their support for the competitors.”

Entry is free and the action starts at 10.00am at Hatfield Activity Centre, Old Thorne Road, Hatfield, DN7 6EQ.  Spectators can support teams as they compete in sporty inflatable games on the ground and in water, join the spectacular festival of colour and the all-important final at 4.00pm.

Stuart Green, Aspire Service Manager, said: “This is a real opportunity for communities to connect and build on their strengths and nurture worthy relationships. This year it’s going to be bigger, better and louder. The lead up has been incredible with an amazing energy of fund raising within the recovery community to get this far.”

The event is organised by Aspire Drug and Alcohol Service which is run by this Trust in partnership with registered charity The Alcohol and Drug Service.

The Recovery Games is completely funded from sponsorship and fundraising activities.
