Advice for patients receiving incontinence pads

Storage of pads

Pads should be stored correctly to ensure they remain effective.

Unused pads should be left in their plastic packets and stored in a cool dry place (not your bathroom).

Putting pads on

Your assessor will explain how the pads should be worn. Some pads require net pants to hold them in place. These are not supplied but can be bought and delivered to you by phoning:

Alternatively, they can be purchased at some pharmacies or disability living shops.

Please avoid using oil-based creams or talc, as these may interfere with the absorbency of the pads.

Pads are issued only on clinical need. Do not stockpile If you are receiving more than you need, please contact your assessor.

What you need to know about your pads

Your first delivery will be requested for you by your assessor and should be delivered within two weeks.

The type of pad prescribed depends on the level of absorbency you require.

You will receive a 12-week supply of pads with each delivery.

It is important that you make a note of the delivery date (this will make it easier to reorder).

Once you have the correct pads it will be your responsibility to request further deliveries by phoning the order line.

Reordering pads

10 weeks after each pad delivery you may phone to reorder. However, if you have a surplus of pads you may delay phoning until you have just two weeks supply left.

Occasionally, you may go through to an answer phone. If this happens, you will need to leave your name, address, and postcode.

Please state that you require a continence pad delivery.

Problems with pads

Once your pads have been delivered it is not usually possible to change the order until they are due again in 12 weeks’ time.

It is therefore important to request a reassessment of any requirement changes as soon as you can.
