Sensory needs
What are sensory needs?
Sensory experience helps us understand the world around us. We all seek sensory input that feels comforting and avoid input that feels overwhelming. Everyone interprets sensory information differently, which can affect thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.
What can help?
Every young person is different, so not all strategies will work for your child. Some may even cause discomfort.
Calming strategies
Some children find comfort in deep pressure, such as sitting under a heavy blanket, being wrapped up, or receiving firm hugs or squeezes. Others may benefit from:
- fidget toys
- enjoyable scents
- a rocking chair or gym ball
- having a small safe space
- chewing aids like Chewlery
Self-care considerations
The feel of fabrics can be important. Your child may prefer clothes without labels or with fewer seams. They might also be sensitive to scents, so using unscented washing products can help.
If washing is a challenge, consider factors like the sound of water, the smell of soap, or the sensation of washing. Adapting routines, such as taking baths instead of showers, using flannels or sponges, or wrapping them in a large towel afterward, may make the experience more comfortable.
Sensory environment adjustments
- Adjust lighting based on your child’s comfort level.
- Reduce visual clutter and distractions, as some children find bright colours or patterns overwhelming.
- Use ear defenders or earplugs in noisy settings.
- Turn off background noise, such as the TV, during tasks.
- Keep the environment tidy and organised to limit distractions.
By recognising and adapting to your child’s sensory needs, you can help them feel more comfortable and focused.
