Wheelchair Services

Woman in a wheelchairThe Doncaster Wheelchair Service provides manual and powered wheelchairs, buggies and specialist seating services to children and adults with temporary or permanent mobility problems, and/or associated postural needs

The overall aim of the service is to support people living with a disability, and their carers, by increasing mobility to maintain independence and improve their quality of life.

The assessment will take in to consideration the individual’s lifestyle, medical conditions, and on-going needs, to determine the most appropriate equipment for the individual.

If an individual wishes to choose an alternative wheelchair, the service offers a Wheelchair Voucher to enable them to purchase the wheelchair of their choice, whilst also meeting any requirements beyond their medical/clinical needs.

Wheelchairs provided by the service are maintained and repaired, free of charge, by our in-house repair and maintenance service.

Who is the service for?

The service is for children (over 3 years), and adults, who are registered with a Doncaster GP, or who live in the Doncaster Borough and are not registered with a GP, who have a permanent disability which affects their mobility.

The Wheelchair Service is not suitable for people who require outdoor-only powered mobility, (i.e. mobility scooter), or those who are living in a nursing or residential home and require a wheelchair for transit use only.


We accept referrals from GPs and other health and social care professionals (self-referrals are not accepted by the service).  Patients already known to the service are able to contact the service directly for a re-assessment, via phone or email.

Following a referral, we will notify you of your appointment by letter or telephone.  If the date and/or time is are not convenient, please contact us and we will re-arrange it for a more convenient time for you.

Patients’ relatives, carers or therapists are very welcome to attend the appointment(s) as this is often useful when patients find it difficult to communicate.

Out of hours arrangements for a fault/damage to a manual wheelchair

There is an out of hours emergency replacement service for patients already known to the Wheelchair Service.  This is available for temporary replacement of manual wheelchairs only.  This service should only be used in circumstances when the manual wheelchair issued by the Service is damaged and is no longer safe to use, i.e. brake failure, buckled wheels, cracked frame, and when the patient is heavily reliant upon the wheelchair.

The Single Point of Access (SPA) service can be contacted by the patient on 01302 566999. The SPA is able to offer a temporary alternative manual wheelchair.

Unfortunately immediate repairs cannot be carried out by this team.  If your wheelchair requires repair the SPA should be able to contact the service during the normal opening hours and an appointment can be arranged.
