North Lincolnshire residents are set to benefit from a new service providing round-the-clock urgent mental health support in a calm, welcoming place.
Developed in partnership with established community organisations, North Lincolnshire Mind and The People Focused Group, The Acorn Centre is run by our trust and based at the Great Oaks Unit on Ashby High Street in Scunthorpe.
Opening at midday on Wednesday 30 September, The Acorn Centre will bring together the lived experience of peer support workers, volunteers and NHS mental health professionals in one place. The centre will provide immediate access to urgent mental health support, for people aged 18 and over, with emotional support, quick assessments, practical help, advice and follow up support. The service builds on the established crisis and home treatment services delivered by us.
Toby Lewis, our Chief Executive, said:
“We are excited to open The Acorn Centre, which is a different model of mental health care, and one we think is long overdue. Even though waiting times at Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust are shorter than other mental health providers nationally, we know that sometimes people need immediate help. That is what the centre, in collaboration with people with lived experience of mental health emergencies, aims to offer residents of Scunthorpe, and those able to travel from surrounding villages.
“This is a 7 day a week, 24-hour service. We have invested in additional professional staff and changed other roles to create something we hope makes a real difference to people at a time of need.”
The opening of The Acorn Centre is the final piece in our wider investment in health facilities in North Lincolnshire. In 2025 we opened the Elizabeth Quarter building in the town centre. Throughout 2026 the wards and gardens at Great Oaks have been undergoing a transformation, with over £4m invested to make sure that facilities are fit for purpose and meet the long-term needs of the community.
