Nutrition and hydration quick guide

Bariatric patients should receive equitable nutrition and hydration care and treatment in as per all other patients. This includes risk assessment for malnutrition as per the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST) template in SystmOne, and implementation of subsequent nutritional action plan (NAP) post malnutrition risk assessment. This is because despite a high BMI, bariatric patients are still at risk of unintentional weight loss which can put them at risk of malnutrition and requires action to be taken. Adequate hydration also needs to be considered for these patients. Ensure to follow the guidance as per the nutrition and hydration policy to support good quality care for these patients.

If there are any concerns regarding a bariatric patient and their nutrition and hydration needs, the dietetic team should be contacted for support and guidance (see directory of specialist advisors).
