Child and adolescent intellectual disabilities

How we can help
The intellectual disabilities service is a specialist pathway of the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS).
The service assesses and treats children and young people aged 0 to 18 who have a significant intellectual disability and additional complex behavioural or mental health needs.
The service provides support with:
- challenging behaviour
- emotional difficulties
- mental health problems
The service offers a range of interventions including:
- assessment of skills, strengths and specific difficulties
- psychiatric assessment and medication
- functional behaviour assessments
- positive behaviour support framework
- behaviour management advice and interventions
- counselling for young people and parents
- psycho-education
- adapted cognitive behavioural therapy
- training in intellectual disabilities and mental health or developmental problems
- group work
- family work
- support in conjunction with neuro-developmental pathways such as autistic spectrum condition (ASC) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- emotional regulation
Non-urgent advice: How to get help
We accept referrals to the service from children and young people who are:
- between the ages of 5 and 18
- have a significant intellectual disability
- display severe challenging behaviour or mental health problems that require the input of a specialist provision
- a resident or registered with a GP in the area of the service
