Children’s and young people’s mental health crisis

Located in Rotherham, Doncaster and North Lincolnshire.

The children and young people’s mental health crisis service is part of the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS). The specialist team helps to understand what support a young person needs and provides short‑term help.

The service is for children and young people aged 18 and under who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

How we can help

Our service provides assessments, risk‑management advice and support, and short‑term interventions for children and young people who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

This includes children and young people who:

  • are at risk of, or are taking part in, significant self-harm
  • have significant and unmanaged risk to themselves or others because of their mental health
  • have expressed suicidal thoughts and have an active plan to take their own life
  • show a rapid and significant change in their behaviour or thinking, or signs of a serious disturbance in their thoughts that may suggest acute mental illness

Urgent advice: How to get help

To make a referral, contact the single point of access (SPA) on 03000 218 996 and press option 2 for mental health services.

The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The call handler will take the information needed to process your referral to the children and young people’s crisis service.

A crisis clinician will look at your referral to decide if an urgent crisis response is needed. If a crisis response is not required, we may send your referral to your child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) for getting advice.

A child and adolescent mental health service clinician will then call you to carry out an initial triage and assessment. They will offer early guidance and talk with you about what further help or support may be needed.

Who can call?

Anyone who is worried about a child or young person in a mental health crisis can contact the children and young people’s crisis service for advice.

We also accept self-referrals from children and young people.

Referrals can be made on behalf of a child or young person, as long as they know about the referral and have given their consent.
