Veterans’ mental health high intensity service (HIS)

The veterans’ mental health high intensity service (HIS) offers urgent care and treatment to veterans experiencing mental health crises.

How we can help

The service collaborates closely with local mental health services that are already providing care to veterans. This collaboration aims to enhance the experience and outcomes of veterans in need.

In the North of England, this service is a joint effort between the NHS and established veterans’ support charities. Our partnership focuses on:

Together, they work with local mental health services to provide:

  • supporting crisis care services for veterans undergoing mental health crises
  • providing assistance during inpatient stays, including access to a clinician advice line 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • offering care navigation services to assist veterans and their caregivers in finding suitable local services tailored to their needs
  • extending support and care to family members and caregivers when needed

How to get help

Referrals to the HIS can be initiated by your healthcare professional. Please inform your clinician about your veteran status, and they can make the necessary referrals on your behalf.
