Teenage contraception
Contraception, historically known as family planning, refers to devices or medications that help prevent pregnancy. There are several different contraceptive options available, and the Zone 5 to 19 service is here to help you choose the method that suits you best.
Some contraceptive methods require you to remember to take them daily, while others can last for several years.
How do I access contraception?
Once we have completed a short health assessment and discussed your individual needs, we can provide your chosen contraception free of charge.
You can also order contraception online through our partners at SH:24 (opens in new window).
Not all methods of contraception are suitable for everyone, and some may have side effects. It is important to find the method that works best for you.
Types of contraception available include:
- condoms
- progestogen-only pill
- combined pill
- combined patch
- injection
- implant
- copper coil
- progestogen coil
What if I have had unprotected sex?
We can also provide emergency contraception, sometimes known as Plan B, if you have had unprotected sex or if your contraception has failed.
Emergency contraception options include:
- a copper coil
- oral tablets
It is important to contact us as soon as possible after unprotected sex so that we can offer the most effective method.
We also provide follow-up pregnancy testing to ensure that the contraception has been successful.
Pregnancy testing
If you have had unprotected sex or your contraception has failed, we can provide pregnancy testing.
The earliest you can take a pregnancy test is either on the first day of a missed period or three weeks after unprotected sex.
To complete the test, you will need to provide a urine sample. The test is carried out in the clinic, and results are available within minutes.
If the result is positive and you are unsure what to do, we offer impartial information on your options.
We can also refer you to midwifery services if you choose to continue with your pregnancy or help you arrange an appointment for a termination if that is your choice.
