Wheelchair and specialist seating

The wheelchair and specialist seating service offers manual and powered wheelchairs, buggies, and specialised seating to assist children and adults dealing with mobility and posture challenges.

This service caters to children and adults who are registered with a Doncaster GP or reside in the Doncaster borough without GP registration, and have a permanent disability affecting mobility.

However, it’s important to note that the service isn’t suitable for individuals requiring exclusively outdoor-powered mobility or those in nursing or residential homes needing transit wheelchairs only.

How we can help

We aim to support patients with disabilities and their caregivers by enhancing mobility to maintain independence and enhance overall quality of life.

Our assessments consider an individual’s lifestyle, medical conditions, and ongoing requirements to determine the most suitable equipment.

We also provide emergency replacement service for manual provision after hours for known patients through the single point of access (SPA).

Who can we help

NHS Doncaster wheelchair provision includes:

  • wheelchairs to meet basic mobility need, with necessary postural and pressure care components
  • manual (non-powered) wheelchairs
  • indoor and indoor or outdoor powered wheelchairs controlled by the occupant including special controls
  • bespoke and custom-made special seating where required
  • the option of a personal wheelchair budget for patients that meet the criteria

NHS wheelchairs are not provided for the following:

  • school use only (responsibility of education authority to fund equipment used exclusively at school)
  • work use only (funding can be sourced from the ‘access to work’ scheme)
  • sporting activities only
  • in place of suitable static seating
  • transportation purposes only
  • children who can be accommodated in a standard retail buggy
  • to manage behaviour in an individual who can walk
  • as a form of restraint
  • electric powered wheelchairs required for outdoor use only
  • manual wheelchairs required for outdoor only mobility for less than daily use
  • dual control powered wheelchairs
  • attendant controlled wheelchairs
  • short term loan wheelchairs
  • rehabilitation purposes only, on wards or in the community
  • nursing, residential home, or prison unless this will facilitate independent mobility unless required specialist equipment, for example, moulded seat
  • prison unless the chair provides independent mobility
  • where the national institute for health and care excellence (NICE) guidelines have not been exhausted
