Psychological support
Following an assessment or triage by the mental health professionals within the Hospital Liaison team, you could be referred to the Psychology team for further support.
You may be offered one of the following:
Psychoeducation group
Every Monday, 3pm to 4pm at Great Oaks Mental Health Unit, Scunthorpe).
This group provides a safe space to learn more about basic mental health skills and helpful coping strategies.
The sessions covered in this group are:
- positive sleep habits
- stress management
- anxiety management
- depression and behaviour activation
Support for people who hear voices, see visions, and have unusual perceptions.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills group
Every Wednesday, 10:30am to 11:30am at Great Oaks Mental Health Unit, Scunthorpe.
The dialectical behaviour therapy skills group offers a supportive environment where you can learn practical skills to manage intense emotions.
The core skills covered in the sessions are:
- mindfulness
- emotion regulation
- distress tolerance
- interpersonal effectiveness
The Psychology team may also provide initial assessments, file reviews and formulation to help you make sense of any main issues, brief one-to-one interventions, and further referrals to other relevant agencies and services.
The Psychology team consists of:
- clinical psychologist
- clinical associate psychologist
- assistant psychologist

The 4-7-8 breathing exercise
- Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
- Exhale through your mouth, making a “whoosh” sound for 8 seconds.
